Retinopathy of prematurity - or ROP - is a condition of the blood vessels of the eye that usually occurs in premature infants. The blood vessels in the retina are formed during pregnancy. When babies are born prematurely, these vessels may not be fully formed. To compensate, the retina triggers disorganized growth of blood vessels.
